Description

What is Onglyza?

Onglyza, with the generic name saxagliptin, is an oral medication indicated to help improve glycemic control together with regular exercise and proper diet among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is not indicated to treat diabetic ketoacidosis, type 1 diabetic Mellitus, and patients with a history of pancreatitis.

This dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor is responsible for slowing the inactivation of incretin hormones like glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). It lessens the glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells and reduces hepatic glucose production.

This is available in Onglyza 2.5mg and Onglyza 5mg tab.

How to use Onglyza?

To begin, read the Onglyza information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not take any diabetes drug without fully understanding the drug information and warnings written in the guide. If you have queries about this maintenance drug or need further medical advice, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily, with or without food or as recommended by the doctor. Swallow the tablet whole and drink a glass of water right after. The manufacturer of this drug does not recommend cutting, crushing, or chewing this product.

Remember to take this medication regularly and with a dosing schedule to get the most out of it. Never alter your Onglyza dosage because it is determined by your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you are taking. Also, do not stop taking this medication even if you feel well to avoid diabetes complications.

Taking this maintenance drug for diabetes is just a part of an entire treatment plan. You must comply with the recommended diet, exercise, and other medications directed by your physician.

Precautions when using Onglyza

Before using this diabetes medication, you must disclose your entire medical history to your doctor, especially pancreatitis, gallstones, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, kidney disease or any renal impairment, and heart failure. Certain diseases or disorders may impact how you will respond to this type of drug. You should also talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking because of the possible drug interactions.

Continuously watch out for an allergic reaction while on this treatment. Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to saxagliptin or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are severe dizziness, hives, swelling of the face, skin rashes, and breathing trouble. In such a case, you should seek emergency medical attention.

Limit or, if possible, avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while on Onglyza. Alcohol and saxagliptin may interact and cause hypoglycemia and pancreatitis. It could also trigger or worsen side effects, such as headaches and dizziness.

You may experience dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, and blurred vision due to abnormalities in blood sugar levels. Always practice safety precautions when doing activities that require clear vision and alertness, such as driving and using machinery.

Some conditions like pregnancy, infection, or surgery may make it harder to control your blood sugar level. Consult your doctor right away if you are under these conditions because it may warrant changes in your treatment plan.
