Januvia (sitagliptin) Indications

Januvia, generic name sitagliptin, is prescribed to help lower blood sugar levels of adults who have type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This is taken along with proper diet and regular exercise.

By taking Januvia, complications of T2DM, such as kidney disease, eye impairment, nerve damage, cardiovascular diseases, and sexual dysfunction, may be prevented.

This prescription medication is not for type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Januvia is classified as a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It works by increasing the production of insulin. It also lowers the secretion of glucagon, which consequently decreases hepatic glucose production.
