Description

Eliquis Uses

Eliquis is an oral medication indicated to lower the risk of strokes and systemic embolisms in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It is also indicated to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that could lead to pulmonary embolism for patients who went through hip or knee replacement surgery.

This is available in Eliquis 5 mg and Eliquis 2.5 mg tablets.

How does Eliquis work?

This factor Xa inhibitor works by hampering free, clot-bound FXa and prothrombinase activity. This drug cannot directly affect platelet aggregation but may inhibit platelet aggregation induced by thrombin. Generally, this could block certain proteins in the blood that cause coagulation.

How to use Eliquis

First, read the enclosed medication information leaflet. Do not take this anticoagulant unless you have fully understood the drug information and instructions written in the guide. If you have further queries regarding this treatment or need more medical advice, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this tablet orally. This is usually prescribed twice daily, with or without food or as directed by your physician. Swallow the tablet and drink a glass of water right after. In the event that you cannot swallow the tablet, you may crush it and mix it with apple juice or applesauce.

Remember to take this medication regularly and exactly as directed. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your dose. Never alter your dosing as it depends on various factors such as age, weight, medical condition, the function of the kidneys, response to treatment, and other medications you are taking.

Do not stop taking this oral drug abruptly or even for a short time because it could worsen your condition. Order your prescription refill before you run out of tablets and never miss your doses.

Precautions

Before starting to take this oral drug, disclose your entire medical history with your physician. This includes any history of blood disorders, bleeding problems, liver disease, kidney disease, stroke clotting disorder, antiphospholipid syndrome, frequent falls or injuries, and major surgeries. Certain disorders or diseases may affect how your body will respond to this drug. You also have to talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, for they might have a drug interaction with this anticoagulant.

You must lookout for an allergic reaction while on this course of treatment. Do not take this oral drug if you have a known allergy to apixaban or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Call for emergency medical attention once you observe signs of hypersensitivity response, including severe dizziness, skin rashes, itchiness, swelling of the face and neck, and breathing trouble.

Limit, and if possible, avoid drinking alcoholic beverages. This could pose a higher risk of stomach bleeding. It could also trigger or worsen adverse effects, such as nausea and dizziness.

This oral anticoagulant may cause bleeding. Practice extreme caution when using sharp objects like a razor, nail cutter, or knife. Avoid getting cut, bruised, or injured to prevent unusual or prolonged bleeding. You should also avoid any contact sports or any activities that could cause falls or injuries.

Pregnant moms must avoid taking this medication because it could cause bleeding or potential harm to unborn or newborn babies. Breastfeeding moms should also use this drug only if clearly needed.
