What is Estring? 

Estring, with the generic name estradiol, is a female hormone used to reduce symptoms of menopause such as vaginal itching, vaginal dryness, painful urination, and urinary urgency. This vaginal medication is a soft and flexible ring that is slightly opaque in color with a whitish center. 

Each Estring ring contains 2 mg of estradiol. This ring could release estradiol in a stable and consistent manner for 90 days. It reduces the levels of gonadotropins, luteinizing hormones, and follicle-stimulating hormones that are commonly elevated in menopausal women.  

How to use Estring 

First, read the medication information leaflet before initiating this medication. Do not use this vaginal medication if you have not fully understood all information and instructions in the guide. This vaginal ring could relieve signs and symptoms of menopause within a few days although bear in mind that it might take around 2 to 3 weeks to achieve the full benefits of this medication. If your menopausal symptoms worsen or do not improve, you may have to consult your doctor. 

Step by step guide in using Estring: 

To insert 

  1. Always wash and dry your hands before insertion to avoid infection. 
  2. Open the pouch and take the ring out. 
  3. Using your dominant hand’s thumb and index finger, hold the vaginal ring and compress the opposite sides together. 
  4. Move to a position that is suitable and comfortable for vaginal ring insertion.  
  5. Insert the vaginal ring gently and slowly. It should be comfortably inserted within the upper third of the vagina. 

To remove 

  1. Always wash your hands before you remove the vaginal ring. 
  2. Move to a position where you can comfortably remove Estring. 
  3. To remove the ring, loop your fingers around it and gently pull it out. 
  4. Discard the vaginal ring properly. 

Side effects

Common side effects of Estring: 

  • Nausea 
  • Dizziness 
  • Weight gain 
  • Headache 
  • Bloating 
  • Abdominal discomfort 
  • Breast tenderness 
  • Increased vaginal discharge 
  • Discomfort in the vagina 

Most of the side effects of this medication are mild and disappear within a few days. If the adverse effects persist or worsen, you may have to contact your doctor or any healthcare professionals right away. It is also very much necessary to watch out for severe adverse reactions, which include: 

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding 
  • Unusual vaginal odor or discharge 
  • Lumps in the breast 
  • Mental or mood changes 
  • Severe abdominal pain 
  • Chest pain 
  • Persistent vomiting 
  • Dark urine 
  • Increased urination 
  • Increased thirst 
  • Swelling of extremities

Before using this vaginal ring, disclose your medical history to your doctor, especially history of stroke, blood clots, heart diseases, kidney disorders, liver disorders, gallbladder disease, hormonal problems, diabetes, hypertension, mental or mood disorders, and cancer. Certain conditions may affect how your body will respond to this drug. In addition, talk about the medications and supplements you are taking as they may interact with this medication. 

It is highly needed to watch out for this medication allergy while using this medication. Do not use this medication if you have a known allergy to estradiol, silicone, or any inactive ingredients this vaginal ring may contain. Alert your local emergency line if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, skin rashes, and itching, as these are the signs of an allergy. 

Consult your physician if your will be restricted or confined in a specific position for a long time, such as being on a long-haul flight and going through surgery. Limited movements may put you at risk of developing blood clots while on this medication. 

Do not smoke or use tobacco while being treated with estradiol. These substances may further increase the risk of developing blood clots, stroke, hypertension, and heart attack. 

This medication may cause dark and blotchy patches on the face and skin. To avoid aggravating this adverse effect, limit sun exposure. You may also wear sunscreen when going outdoors. Indoor tanning should also be avoided.
