About Jardiance

Empagliflozin, sold under the trade name Jardiance, is a prescription drug used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. It is prescribed in the form of 10 mg and 25 mg tablets, in conjunction with a diet and an exercise routine. It helps ensure healthy blood sugar levels. This medicine can also be used to decrease the risk of death by heart failure in diabetic patients with heart diseases. However, it is not prescribed for patients of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

About Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in adults. Patients diagnosed with this condition have high sugar or glucose levels in their bloodstream because of the lack of a hormone called insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a type of diabetes in which body cells fail to properly react to insulin. This is led by a state where the body fails to produce sufficient insulin.

Early symptoms include weight loss, tiredness, dry mouth, frequent urination, low energy levels, and blurry vision. If left uncontrolled, symptoms like yeast infections, reduced rate of healing, foot ache, neuropathy, and acanthosis nigricans may occur.

How Jardiance Works in the Body

Jardiance is used as an integral component of the treatment plan for type 2 diabetic patients. Other components include physical activity and a healthy diet.

Jardiance helps lower the sugar levels by channeling the excess quantity of glucose out of the body through urine. The medicine works to provide better glycemic control to adult patients. The medicine contains Empagliflozin, which is a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.  The SGLT2 proteins account for reabsorption of 90% of the glucose filtered by the kidneys.

This medication successfully eliminates a considerable quantity of blood sugar from the body by preventing reabsorption of the sodium-glucose transport proteins. This leads to improved HbA1c levels and low risk of complications in diabetic adults.

Before You Take Jardiance

Before Jardiance is prescribed to you by your health care provider, it’s important to discuss if you are suffering from any renal or liver conditions. The doctor will conduct blood tests before and during the treatment to monitor the function of kidneys.

Inform your doctor regarding any history of urinary tract infection or problems with urination. Your doctor must be aware of your plans for getting any surgical treatment during the course of Jardiance intake.

Since the diet is an important factor of the treatment with Jardiance, the doctor should be informed about any change in diet. Additional information about the health of your pancreas should also be presented to the doctor. Discuss your alcohol consumption habits with the doctor. If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breast-feeding, inform your doctor as the medication may have harmful effects for the baby.

Give details regarding any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, herbal products, supplements, which you are taking with Jardiance.
