Rybelsus (semaglutide) Indications

Rybelsus, generic name semaglutide, is an oral prescription used to improve the blood sugar of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This medication is used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise.

Rybelsus is not approved for the first line treatment in people with T2DM and is not approved for use in those with type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Rybelsus is classified as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It acts by stimulating the secretion of insulin and lowers glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent mechanism. It also slows down gastric emptying in the early phase after a meal, which also helps lower the blood glucose level.
