What is Xiidra Ophthalmic Solution?

Xiidra, with the generic name lifitegrast, is an ophthalmic solution indicated to treat the signs and symptoms of dry eyes disease or DED. It helps relieve stinging or burning in the eyes, redness, sensitivity to light, and the sensation that there is something in the eyes.

This is available in Xiidra 5% (50 mg/mL) ophthalmic solution.

How does Xiidra work?

This lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonist works by inhibiting T-cell adhesion to intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in the human T-cell line. It may also inhibit the secretion of inflammatory cytokines in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

To initiate, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this product. Never use this eye medication unless you have thoroughly read the drug information and instruction in the guide provided. If you need further medical advice or have queries on Xiidra ingredients, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Remember to use this drug regularly to achieve the best results. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your dose. If you forget to administer it on time, administer the ophthalmic solution as you remember.

This eye medication is usually prescribed twice daily, once every twelve hours. Do not alter the prescribed dosage and frequency. Also, do not abruptly stop using Xiidra unless advised by the doctor to avoid worsening conditions or rebound effects.

Step by step guide when using Xiidra:

Always wash your hands properly, then dry them before applying this eye solution. Prepare the product and never touch the tip of the dropper to avoid contamination. If you are using a single-use container, do not open the foil pouch until you are ready to use it.

In a comfortable position, lying or sitting, slightly tilt your head back. Then, look upward and gently pull down your lower eyelid to make a pouch.

Hold the dropper directly above your eyes. Press the container to release a drop into the pouch.

Slowly look downward and close your eyes. Press the inner corner of your eyes to prevent the medication from draining. Do not blink, squint, or rub your eyes.

Close the solution and store it properly. If you use a single-use container, dispose it after use even if there is still some remaining solution.

Xiidra vs Restasis

These two are not the same. Xiidra addresses most signs and symptoms of DED, while the latter only treats dry eyes.

Precautions

Before using these eye drops, make sure you have fully disclosed your medical history to your physician, especially any previous eye problems. Some medical conditions may significantly affect how you will respond to treatment. You also have to tell your doctor about all the prescription drugs and nonprescription drugs you are taking as they may have drug interactions with lifitegrast.

Continually watch out for signs of an allergic reaction while using this product. Avoid administering this solution if you have a known allergy to lifitegrast or any inactive ingredients that this ophthalmic solution may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are swelling of the face, severe dizziness, hives, skin rashes, and trouble breathing. Discontinue the use of medication and seek emergency help if this occurs.
