Description

Janumet XR is an extended-release tablet that helps those with diabetes type II Mellitus manage their blood sugar levels. This medication is an adjunct medication, meaning that it will not have adequate effects on its own. Instead, it must be used to improve the health benefits of a regular exercise routine and a balanced diet.

Janumet XR is made using two active ingredients, sitagliptin and metformin.

Sitagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. DPP-4 is an enzyme whose role is to destroy incretin, a hormone in the liver that produces insulin and reduces glucose in the liver. For people with diabetes, blocking the action of DPP-4 results in more insulin, decreasing sugar in the bloodstream.

Metformin is a biguanide, which also works by reducing the amount of glucose the liver produces. It also makes the body’s cells more sensitive to insulin, allowing sugar to be absorbed and utilized in cells more effectively, further improving glycemic control (blood-sugar regulation).

Janumet vs Janumet XR?

XR stands for “extended-release”. XR or ER capsules have an outer layer that takes longer for stomach acids to dissolve, allowing the drug to be released slowly over a longer period of time than normal. Janumet comes in an extended-release version and in a regular version.

Can Janumet XR be taken twice daily?

This medication has long-acting effects and should only be taken once per day, whereas Janumet is meant to be taken twice a day. You should never take an extended-release tablet at the same dosage for its regular counterpart unless your doctor has specifically told you that you can.
