What is Hytrin used for?

Hytrin generic name terazosin hydrochloride is an oral medication indicated to treat symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It improves symptoms of BPH and increases urinary flow by relaxing the muscles in the prostate gland and part of the bladder.

This medication is also prescribed to treat high blood pressure or hypertension. This could be used alone or together with other antihypertensive agents. By controlling high blood pressure, complications like kidney problems, heart attack, and stroke can be prevented.

This is available in Hytrin 10 mg, 5 mg, 2 mg, and 1 mg tablet forms.

How does Hytrin work?

This alpha-adrenergic blocker mainly works by relaxing the veins and arteries in order for the blood to flow more easily through them. It inhibits the alpha-1 adrenoreceptors resulting in the relaxation of smooth muscles in both blood vessels and the prostate. Through this action, blood pressure can be decreased, and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, such as frequent or urgent urination, weak stream, and difficulty in beginning the urine flow can be relieved.

How to use Hytrin

To start, read the Hytrin information leaflet that comes with this prescription medication. Do not use this type of drug if you have not yet fully understood the drug information and warnings written in the manual. If you need further medical advice or have inquiries regarding the use of this alpha-adrenergic blocker, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily. Take the dose at bedtime to avoid injury related to dizziness and fainting that could be caused by this drug. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow the pill whole and follow with a glass of water. Ask for assistance from a pharmacist if you want to divide the tablets in half.

Take this medication exactly as prescribed and on a regular basis. To avoid skipping medications, make a dosage regimen. Your physician may start with the lowest dose and gradually increase it to allow your body to adjust to the medication.

Do not alter your Hytrin dose and length of treatment as it is based on your medical condition and response to medication. Also, do not stop taking this drug abruptly to avoid worsening conditions or rebound effects.

This is because some conditions may greatly affect how your system will respond to the medication. In addition, you should talk about all prescription medications, nonprescription medication, herbal products, and supplements you are taking because of possible drug interactions.

Keep an eye out for allergic reactions while receiving this treatment. Avoid taking this oral medication if you have a known allergy to terazosin, doxazosin, prazosin, other alpha-blockers, or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Discontinue medication and call for emergency medical attention once you notice signs of hypertension, such as red patches (rashes) on the skin, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, hives, and trouble breathing.

Among the adverse effects of this alpha-adrenergic blocker are dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. These reactions could be triggered or aggravated by alcohol consumption. As much as possible, limit/avoid drinking alcohol. When driving, using machinery, or engaging in tasks that need attention and clear eyesight, you should use great caution.
