Description

What is Exjade used for?

Exjade, with the generic name deferasirox, is an oral medication used to treat chronic iron overload secondary to multiple blood transfusions and non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) syndromes. It prevents complications of iron buildup in the system, such as liver disease, heart failure, and diabetes.

This orally active chelator is selective for iron. It works by binding to iron and allowing it to pass extra iron into the stool. The strengths available are Exjade 500 mg, 250 mg, and 125 mg tablets for oral suspension.

How to use Exjade

To initiate, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not take this chelating agent unless you have fully understood the drug information and instructions in the guide. If you need further help on using this drug or have further queries, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

To take this iron-chelating agent, split the tablet into a glass of water or fruit juice. If the prescribed tablet is less than 1 gram, mix with 100 mL or half a cup of fluid. If the tablet is more than 1 gram, use 200 mL or about one cup of fluid. Mix the tablet into the liquid until completely dissolved, and then drink it right away. Add more fluid to the glass again, stir to get all the remaining drugs, and drink it again.

This drug should be taken without food or on an empty stomach – at least thirty minutes before a meal. This is usually prescribed once a day. Never chew the tablets or swallow it whole as it is meant to be mixed into liquid.

Exjade dosage

Keep track of your dosage schedule and use Exjade regularly. Do not raise your dose, take it more frequently, or use it for a longer period of time than recommended. This will not improve your condition but would rather increase the risk of side effects. Your dosage depends on your medical condition, weight, response to treatment, and laboratory test results.

Common side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort

In most cases, the side effects caused by this drug are mild and temporary. If any of the adverse reactions persist or get worse, contact your physician or any healthcare professional. In addition, look out for severe side effects, including:

This is not a complete or full list of side effects.

Precautions when using Exjade

Before using Exjade, you must fully disclose your medical history to your physician. This includes any history of low platelet count, bone marrow disorders like myelodysplastic syndrome, liver disease, kidney disease, or cancer. Some medical conditions may significantly impact how your body will respond to medication. You also have to tell your physician about all the supplements, herbal products, prescription drugs, and nonprescription drugs you are taking, for they may have drug interactions with deferasirox.

Be watchful for signs of an allergic reaction. Do not take this oral suspension if you have a known allergy to deferasirox or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Immediately discontinue use of this drug and seek emergency medical attention once hypersensitivity response occurs. Signs of hypersensitivity are skin rash, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, hives, and breathing trouble.

Avoid drinking alcohol and taking other similar substances that could trigger side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. Practice caution while driving, using machinery, and doing activities that require alertness and clear vision.

You must call your doctor right away if you develop or experience any condition that could cause water loss, such as fever, diarrhea, or vomiting. This could warrant an adjustment in dose or discontinuation of treatment.

Exjade could potentially cause danger to unborn children. Pregnant women must use this medication only when highly needed. Keep in mind that potential benefits must outweigh potential risks.
