Hyzaar Uses

Hyzaar generic name, Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide is an oral prescription drug indicated to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). This type of combination therapy is not recommended for the initial treatment of hypertension. This is only used if the high blood pressure is severe enough that the value of achieving prompt blood pressure control can exceed the risk of this fixed-dose combination. This medication is also used to lower the risk of strokes among patients with hypertension and an enlarged heart.

This is available in Hyzaar 100/12.5 mg, and 50/12.5 mg tablets.

Hyzaar Mechanism of Action

This prescription drug is a combination of angiotensin II receptor agonist and thiazide diuretic. Hyzaar works by blocking the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II through the selective blocking of the binding of angiotensin II to the angiotensin I receptor found in tissues. This drug can also increase the excretion of sodium and chloride in estimated equivalent amounts.

How to use Hyzaar

To begin, read the Hyzaar guide or information leaflet that comes with the product. Do not take this antihypertensive medication unless you have fully understood the drug information and precautions printed in the guide. If you have queries on the use of this prescription drug or need more medical advice, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily. It is best to administer your dose at least 4 hours before bedtime as this medication can make you get up at night to urinate more frequently. You may take this with or without a meal. Swallow the tablet whole and drink water right after. It is not recommended to chew, split, or crush this medication.

Remember to take this antihypertensive drug regularly and exactly as prescribed to achieve full benefits. Organize your dosing schedule so you don’t miss a dose. If you are prescribed cholesterol-lowering agents, like colestipol, take Hyzaar 4 hours before or 6 hours after these drugs.

Do not alter your Hyzaar dosage as it is based on your medical condition, other drugs you are taking, and response to treatment. Also, do not stop taking this drug abruptly or even for a short time to avoid worsening conditions.

Precautions when using Hyzaar

Before starting to use this antihypertensive agent, you should fully disclose your medical history to your doctor, including skin cancer, lupus, gout, dehydration, electrolytes imbalance, kidney problems, and liver disease. Some diseases or disorders may significantly impact how your body will respond to the treatment. In addition, you should discuss all prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are using because of possible drug interactions.

Be cautious of possible allergic reactions while on this medication. Do not take this oral drug if you have a known allergy to losartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or any inactive ingredients each film-coated tablet may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are breathing trouble, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, skin rashes, and hives/itchiness. Immediately discontinue medication and seek emergency medical attention if severe hypersensitivity occurs.

This medication may cause dizziness and lightheadedness. These reactions may be aggravated by the consumption of alcohol. Try to avoid drinking alcohol when taking this medication. Taking safety precautions is also important when you do activities that require alertness, such as operating machinery and driving.

If you are diagnosed with diabetes, it may be necessary to check your blood sugar regularly because this drug may increase your blood glucose level. Your physician may also adjust your diabetes medication and your diet and exercise.

Your risk for skin cancer may increase, and you might become more sensitive to the sun while using this drug. Avoid indoor tanning and limit your sun exposure as much as possible. Wear protective clothing and apply sunblock cream when going outside.

Pregnant moms must avoid this medication as it is likely to cause harm to unborn babies. Additionally, the hydrochlorothiazide component of this drug can pass into breast milk. Breastfeeding moms must use this drug only if clearly needed.
