What is Glumetza used for?

Glumetza, with the generic name metformin hydrochloride, is an oral medication prescribed together with proper diet and exercise to treat high blood glucose levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. By improving glycemic control, this medication can prevent complications of diabetes like stroke, heart attack, blindness, nerve damage, loss of limbs, sexual dysfunction, and kidney damage. However, this medication does not treat type1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis.

This is available in Glumetza 1000 mg and 500 mg extended-release tablets.

How does Glumetza work?

This biguanide basically works by improving glucose tolerance and lowering basal and postprandial blood glucose. This anti-diabetic drug inhibits glucose synthesis in the liver, decreases glucose absorption in the intestines, and increases insulin sensitivity by improving peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This medication does not affect insulin secretion but works on insulin response.

How to use Glumetza

To start, read the medication guide or information leaflet that comes with this prescription product. Do not take any medication for diabetes without fully understanding the drug information and precautions in the manual provided. If you need more medical advice on your condition or have inquiries regarding this diabetes drug, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily or as directed by your physician. You should take this drug with your dinner. Drink lots of water and swallow the pill whole. Do not crush or chew this extended-release tablet because doing so can release the drug at once. As a result, the chance of adverse effects increases.

Remember to take this prescription medication regularly and exactly as prescribed. To avoid skipping doses, create a dosage regimen. Do not alter your Glumetza dosage and frequency as it is based on your medical condition, other drugs you are prescribed, and response to therapy. Further, do not stop taking this oral medication abruptly or even for a while to avoid worsening conditions.

Precautions when using Glumetza

Before starting to take this oral medication, you should disclose your entire medical history to your physician. This includes any history of severe asthma, obstructive lung disease, anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, liver disease, and kidney problems. Some conditions may directly impact how your body will respond to the treatment. Also, you should discuss all prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, herbal products, and supplements you are taking because of possible drug interactions with biguanides.

Always lookout for an allergic reaction while on this medication. Do not take this extended-release drug if you have a known allergy to metformin or any inactive ingredients this may contain. Immediately discontinue medication and seek emergency help once you notice signs of severe hypersensitivities, such as severe dizziness, breathing trouble, skin rashes, swelling of the face and neck, and itchiness.

Metformin could possibly increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Consider it a medical emergency once you experience extreme fatigue, muscle cramps, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, and loss of appetite. This condition is more common in the elderly, heavy alcohol drinkers, and people with hepatic impairment.

Among the adverse effects of this medication are headaches and drowsiness. This could be caused by low blood sugar and alcohol consumption. Avoid or limit drinking alcohol. You should also practice caution when driving, using machinery, and doing activities that require alertness.

This medication may cause changes in your menstrual cycle. It can promote ovulation and increase the risk of getting pregnant. If needed, consult your healthcare provider about reliable birth control methods.

Pregnant and breastfeeding moms should take this medication only when clearly necessary. Discuss the possible risks and benefits before using this diabetic medication.
