What is Multaq?

Multaq, with the generic name dronedarone, is an oral antiarrhythmic drug used for patients who have a history of paroxysmal and/or persistent atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. It helps maintain and support a normal heart rhythm and reduces the risk of cardiovascular hospitalization.

This antiarrhythmic “multi-blocker” exhibits the four properties of Vaughan-Williams classes – beta-blockers, sodium-channel blockers, calcium-channel blockers, and potassium-channel blockers. As a result, it achieves control in heart rate and sinus rhythm. This drug is available in Multaq 400 mg film-coated tablets.

How to use Multaq

To start, read the medication guide or information leaflet that comes with this oral drug. Never take Multaq if you have not fully understood all the instructions, including the risks and benefits stated in the guide. In case you need further medical advice on this treatment, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this drug orally. This is usually prescribed twice a day, with a meal (with breakfast and with dinner). Swallow the tablet whole and drink a glass of water. Cutting, chewing, or crushing the film-coated tablets is not recommended.

Remember to take this medication regularly and with a dosing schedule to achieve the best results. Follow the doctor’s instructions carefully. The frequency and dosage of this drug will depend on your condition, response to treatment, and other medications you are taking. Do not alter your dosing or stop taking this medication abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Before using this oral medication, disclosing your full medical history to your physician is necessary. This includes any history of heart problems, liver problems, or lung disease due to taking amiodarone. Some medical conditions may directly affect how your body will respond to treatment. In addition, tell your physician about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and supplements you are taking as they may have drug interactions with dronedarone.

Look out for signs of an allergy while on this treatment. Avoid taking this medication if you have a known allergy to dronedarone or any inactive ingredients each film-coated tablet may contain. Stop taking the drug and seek emergency help if you observe signs of hypersensitivity response such as severe dizziness, trouble breathing, skin rashes, swelling of the face, and hives.

This drug may cause QT prolongation. Alert your local emergency line once you experience palpitations, irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, and fainting. To avoid this, stay hydrated, do not take diuretics or water pills, and watch out for low levels of potassium and magnesium in the blood.

Do not eat anything that has grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice as it has a substance that increases the amount of dronedarone in the system. This raises the chance of negative consequences.
