What is Lipitor used for?

Lipitor (generic name: atorvastatin calcium) is an oral medication indicated to treat elevated total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides, and it also increases the level of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). This drug is also used to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and angina among people with risk factors. This prescription medication is an adjunct to diet and exercise.

The following strengths of Lipitor are available: 80 mg, 40 mg, 20 mg, and 10 mg tablets.

How does Lipitor work?

This HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) works by lowering plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels through the inhibition of the enzyme of cholesterol biosynthesis. It also inhibits cholesterol in the liver and increases the number of hepatic LDL receptors to enhance the uptake and catabolism of LDL.

How to use Lipitor

Read the medication information leaflet included with this product before using it. Do not take this prescription drug if you have not fully understood the drug information and warnings written in the guide. If you need further medical advice or have queries regarding this type of treatment, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take Lipitor tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily, with or without a meal or as directed by the doctor. Swallow this tablet and drink a glass of water thereafter. Ask your pharmacist before you split or divide each tablet.

Remember to take this drug regularly and with a dosing schedule to achieve the best results. If you are prescribed with other cholesterol-lowering drugs, especially bile acid-binding resins, take atorvastatin at least one hour prior or four hours after taking other medications for cholesterol.

Do not alter your dosing because it is determined by your medical condition, response to treatment, other medications you are taking, and age. In addition, do not stop taking Lipitor abruptly to avoid any worsening conditions.

Lipitor Side Effects

Precautions when using Lipitor

Before using this statin, you must disclose your full medical history with your physician, especially any history of kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, or alcohol abuse. Certain conditions may affect how your system will respond to this drug. You must also talk about all the prescription drugs and nonprescription drugs you are taking, for they may have drug interactions with this prescription drug.

Be watchful for an allergic reaction while on this treatment. Do not take this oral statin if you have a known allergy to atorvastatin or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are breathing trouble, severe dizziness, hives, skin rashes, and swelling of the face and neck. Alert your local emergency line once you notice these symptoms.

Limit drinking of alcoholic beverages. Alcohol intake may further increase the risk of liver problems. It could also trigger adverse effects such as dizziness and drowsiness while taking Lipitor.

Do not eat anything with grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while on atorvastatin. Doing so may increase the amount of active ingredients in the system. Thus, it could increase the risk of side effects.

Take this oral statin only if clearly necessary. Pregnant or breastfeeding moms must not use Lipitor because of the potential harm this drug may pose on unborn infants and breastfed children.
