Description

What is Advair Diskus?

Advair Diskus, with the generic name fluticasone propionate, is an oral inhalation indicated to treat airflow obstruction and reduce exacerbations among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This is also used as a maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 4 years of age and up. It controls and prevents symptoms like shortness of breath and wheezing.

This combination of corticosteroid and long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists has potent anti-inflammatory effects. It is also a long-lasting inhibitor of mast cell mediators and could weaken allergy-induced bronchial hypersensitivity. This is available in Advair Diskus 500/50 mcg, 250/50 mcg, and 100/50 mcg inhalation powder.

How to use Advair Diskus

To initiate, read Advair Diskus information leaflet thoroughly. Do not use this inhaler if you have not fully understood the instructions and drug information in the guide provided. You may ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or if you have additional queries on this treatment.

Remember to use this inhaler regularly and follow all the directions given by your physician. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your dose. Your Advair Diskus dosage will depend on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Never use this inhalation more frequently, increase your dose, or stop using it abruptly as it could lead to worsening conditions.

If you are prescribed other inhalers, wait for at least 1 minute before administering other inhalers. Use Advair Diskus last. Additionally, remember that you should not take another long-acting beta-agonists while on Advair Diskus.

Step by step guide in using Advair Diskus:

1. Open the Advair Diskus by holding it with your non-dominant hand and placing the thumb of your dominant hand in the thumb grip. Push the grip away from you until it snaps and you see the mouthpiece.

2. Hold it in a flat position with the mouthpiece facing you. Then, slide the lever away from the mouthpiece until you hear a click. The counter will read “1”, which indicates that Advair Diskus is ready to use.

3. Exhale in a deep and long manner through the mouth as you hold the Advair diskus inches away, mouth-level.

4. Hold your breath as you put the mouthpiece into your lips.

5. Inhale quickly but deeply through your mouth.

6. Remove the Advair Diskus from your mouth and hold your breath for at least ten seconds.

7. Exhale slowly. You may taste/feel the powder at this point.

8. Close the Advair diskus by placing your thumb on the grip again and sliding it towards you until it clicks shut.

9. Rinse your mouth with water right away.

Note that you must dispose of your Advair Diskus when the counter reads “0” or when it has been a month after the foil pouch was opened, whichever comes first.
