What is Dukoral used for?

Dukoral is an oral vaccine used to help prevent severe diarrhea caught from contaminated food or water due to cholera infection caused by bacteria called Vibrio cholera. Also, this medication is given to protect against travelers’ diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) bacteria.

This vaccine is given to individuals aging two years old and above who will be visiting high-risk areas.

How does Dukoral work?

Cholera and ETEC bacteria produce toxins that cause persistent diarrhea when you come in contact with contaminated food or water.

When you have taken this vaccine, it works by preparing your immune system to defend against cholera and ETEC infection. This vaccine will help the body develop antibodies against specific pathogens. When you come in contact with contaminated food or water, the antibodies can prevent the bacteria and their toxin from binding to the gastrointestinal tract wall and entering the cells. As a result, it will impede the colonization of Vibrio cholera and ETEC bacteria.

Note that the body will take one week after vaccination to develop protection against such infections.

Dukoral Vaccine Dosage

The number of times you will use this vaccine will depend on the evaluation of your healthcare provider. Generally, your age and trip date will be a factor.

For people six years of age and older, a primary course of two doses spaced one week apart is advised to help prevent cholera. Two years after the initial treatment, one booster dose is recommended. The suggested dosage for children between the age of two and six is three doses spaced one week apart. Six years after the initial treatment, one booster dose is administered.

For people older than two, two doses spaced one week apart are advised to prevent ETEC infection.
