Description

Feldene Uses

Feldene (generic name: piroxicam) is an oral medication indicated to relieve the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Feldene can reduce joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. By reducing the symptoms, patients can return to their normal daily activities. This could be taken along with other pain medications or non-drug treatments to address chronic arthritis.

This is available in Feldene 20 mg and 10 mg capsule forms.

Feldene Mechanism of Action

This nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) works as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic. It works by reversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase, which causes peripheral inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. These lipid compounds are produced by the enzyme COX-1.

This medication blocks such enzymes, which results in the disruption of prostaglandin production. Further, Feldene inhibits the migration of leukocytes into the areas of inflammation and inhibits the formation of thromboxane A2, the aggregating agent released by activated platelets.

How to use Feldene

To begin, read the Feldene guide or information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not take any prescription medication without fully understanding the drug information and how to take the medication properly. If you need further medical advice regarding your condition or have queries on how this NSAID works, you can ask your doctor and/or pharmacist.

Take the capsule orally. This is usually prescribed once daily or as directed by your physician. You must take this medication with a meal, milk, or an antacid to avoid stomach upset. Swallow the capsule and drink a full glass or 240mL of water right after. Do not lie down for not less than 10 minutes after taking this drug.

Remember to take this drug regularly and exactly as directed to achieve full benefits. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your doses. If you are taking this NSAID as needed, note that it will work best if taken as the first signs of pain occur. Do not alter your dosing and frequency because they will depend on your overall health condition and response to treatment.

This is because some diseases or disorders may directly affect how your body will respond to the medication. Moreover, you should talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking because of the possible drug interactions.

Be watchful for an allergic reaction while you are on this treatment. Do not take this oral drug if you have a known allergy to piroxicam, aspirin, ibuprofen, celecoxib, naproxen, other NSAIDs, or any inactive ingredients each capsule may contain. Kidney problems may occur when you use NSAIDs. This could be aggravated by dehydration, heart problems, or kidney failure. Make sure to always stay hydrated while on this medication. Drink plenty of fluids and tell your healthcare provider if there are changes in your urine output.

Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking/using tobacco while on this medication. The substances they may contain could cause stomach bleeding. You should also use extra caution when engaging in tasks that need attentiveness.

This type of drug will make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid indoor tanning and limit your sun exposure. You should also apply sunblock cream and wear protective clothing when going outdoors.
