What Is Relpax Used For?

The active ingredient in this medication is called eletriptan hydrobromide, part of a class of medications called 5 HT agonists. 5 HT agonists are a type of serotonin receptor agonists that are commonly used in the treatment of migraine headaches.

Relpax is not intended for regular use to manage and reduce symptoms, and is instead meant to be taken only when migraine attacks strike. Using Relpax every day to prevent migraines when they are not present can have serious health complications and is strictly ill-advised. This should not be used to dull the pain of any condition other than migraines — do not use Relpax for normal headaches or muscle/joint pain.

Warning: Medication overuse can lead to rebound headaches.

Relpax for Migraines

The cause of migraine headaches is not entirely known, but it’s believed to be due to blood vessels in the head widening as a result of serotonin deficiencies in the brain. Relpax agonizes serotonin receptors, meaning they replicate the effects that serotonin has on the neurological response system. Ultimately, the cause of migraines is due to an imbalance of chemicals in the body, and this medication is capable of restabilizing serotonin.

The majority of people who use Relpax do not experience any side effects, although it’s always important to be aware of the Relpax side effects that can cause, especially more serious ones, to ensure your safety.

  • Headaches distinct from migraines
  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Call your doctor or seek medical advice right away if you experience serious side effects including:

  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Stomach pain accompanied with weight loss, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Tingling or numb sensations
  • Feelings of tightness or heaviness in extremities
  • Pale, cold, or blue in fingers or toes
  • Sudden numbness, loss of movement, slurred speech, severe headaches — these are signs of a stroke and should be treated as a medical emergency
  • Chest pain. Pressure or pain in the jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating — these may be signs of a heart attack and should be treated as a medical emergency

This medication is not intended for regular use to manage and reduce symptoms, and is instead meant to be taken only when migraine attacks strike. Using Relpax every day to prevent migraines when they are not present can have serious health complications and is strictly ill-advised. Relpax should not be used to dull the pain of any condition other than migraines — do not use this drug for normal headaches or muscle/joint pain.

Warning: Medication overuse can lead to rebound headaches.

You should follow the Relpax Dosing instructions and as your doctor prescribed it and refrain from deviating from the dosage in any way. Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they also have migraines.

Your starting dose may be one 20 mg or 40 mg tablet to be taken at the onset of migraine headaches. An additional dose can be taken if the symptoms of your migraine do not go away within 2 hours after taking the first dose. The maximum daily dose is 80 mg. Do not take more than 80 mg in a single 24 hour period.

Is Relpax a Narcotic?

Relpax is a triptan, which is a kind of medication that are commonly used to treat migraines. All triptans are non-narcotic substances. Opioids are narcotics that have been used in the treatment of migraines in some cases where other medications do not work. There is much debate over whether opioids are effective in the treatment of migraines at all, but one thing that’s verified is that opioids can have worse adverse effects, cause rebound headaches, and are extremely addictive.

For this reason, opioids are prescribed only when they are essential, and no other treatment is available for a particular patient. Triptans are in a separate category of drugs, and are considered safer to use and are prescribed more often to treat migraines.

Relpax vs Imitrex

Imitrex is a similar medication that’s also used to treat migraines. Like Relpax, it’s a triptan medication, and its generic name is sumatriptan.

Relpax is usually the first option for migraine treatment. This is because it has shown to be a more effective medication overall. In a clinical trial that directly compared the two, it was found that this was superior in its safety, tolerability, and effectiveness at treating migraines.

Imitrex has an advantage in that it is a versatile medication. It comes in many more forms and strength, which can help work around some negative responses to the drug. It also has less severe drug interaction, can be used during pregnancy, and is available in generic form.
