What is Elmiron?

Elmiron, also known as pentosan polysulfate sodium, is an oral medication used to relieve bladder pain and discomfort caused by interstitial cystitis (IC). This is prescribed among adult patients and children above the age of 16.

This weak blood thinner or anticoagulant works by forming a layer on the wall of the bladder and guarding it against irritating or harmful substances found in the urine. This is available in Elmiron 100 mg capsule form.

How to use Elmiron

To start, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this drug. Read all the information and instructions in the guide. If you need further medical advice or have queries on Elmiron uses, ask your physician or pharmacist.

Take this drug orally. It must be administered at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. Do not split or chew this delayed-release capsule so as not to release the active ingredients all at once. Swallow it and drink with a glass of water.

Remember to take this medication regularly and with a dosing schedule. This is usually administered three times a day. However, your Elmiron dosage and frequency will depend on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not take this medication more frequently than prescribed or stop using it abruptly to avoid worsening conditions or rebound effects.

Some medical conditions may affect how your body will respond to the treatment.
