When should Surmontil/Trimipramine not be taken?

If you have any allergies to Surmontil or any of the ingredients listed on the label, if you have had a heart attack recently, had acute congestive heart failure or are currently taking a MAO inhibitor do not take Surmontil.

What precautions should I follow when taking Surmontil/Trimipramine?

Prior to using this medication you should inform your health care provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Also if you have any health conditions or high blood pressure you should consult with your doctor before using Surmontil.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Surmontil/Trimipramine?

Surmontil may cause an irregular heart rate especially when taken in large amounts. Surmontil should be taken with care by elderly people and those with a past of heart disease. Surmontil may affect awareness and the mental and physical abilities required for some tasks (ex: driving).

What are the side effects of Surmontil/Trimipramine?

Severe: Distorted vision, confusion or hallucination, constipation (usually in seniors), decreased sexual aptitude, trouble speaking or swallowing, eye tenderness, fainting, quickened or uneven heartbeat (hammering, racing, skipping), unsteadiness, dizzy,

How should I take Surmontil/Trimipramine?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
