How Effexor Works
Effexor is one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants in the United States. It contains Venlafaxine as its primary acting ingredient. It belongs to a special class of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs).
SSNRIs inhibit the reuptake of monoamines, especially serotonin and norepinephrine. These are the chemical substances found in the brain, also known as neurotransmitters, which play a vital role in regulating mood and relieving depression. The drug affects brain chemistry and communication between the brain cells to help with a number of mental health disorders.
Effexor is available as extended-release capsules meant for oral administration.
Conditions Treated with Effexor
Effexor is a prescription drug used for the treatment of a number of mental disorders caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Some common conditions treated with Effexor are as follows:
Major Depressive Disorder
MDD, also known as clinical depression, is a medical condition experienced by approximately 7% of the American population in 2015. Sadness is a major part of the life of patients suffering from this disorder. Feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness are common in the lives of such patients. Loss of appetite and disturbed or lack of sleep are also common symptoms. The changes in mood and behaviour also have a significant impact on the physical functions of the body.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
GAD is a condition in which the patient undergoes constant, never-ending worry and anxiety without reason. They keep on anticipating that something will go wrong in their personal or professional lives. This worry keeps them from living a normal life.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Also known as social phobia, SAD refers to the condition in which a person develops a severe fear of social interactions. The patient is scared of being judged negatively or rejected by the people. Such patients stammer, blush or act awkward in a social setting. They have performance and stage phobia. When exposed to social settings, they experience a racing heart, nausea, excessive sweating, and anxiety attacks, which may seem unreasonable to other people.
It is a type of anxiety disorder that involves unexpected, reoccurring panic attacks. Symptoms include palpitations, sweating, shivering, difficulty in breathing, and fear of disaster.
These conditions are treated with drug and therapy sessions. If left untreated, it can make life difficult for the people suffering from them and their loved ones. Also, these conditions can lead to suicidal thoughts.
