What is Penlac Nail Lacquer used for?

Penlac Nail Lacquer, with the generic name ciclopirox, is a topical solution used to treat mild to moderate onychomycosis of fingernails and toenails caused by Trichophyton rubrum, with no lunula involvement. This is usually given to immunocompetent patients.

This is available in Penlac 8% in 6 g and 12 g solutions.

How does Penlac Nail Lacquer work?

The exact mechanism of this solution is not fully known yet. However, clinical studies suggest that it acts by chelation of polyvalent cations leading to the inhibition of enzymes that are metal-dependent. These enzymes become responsible for the degradation of peroxides in the fungal cell. This action is thought to stop the growth of fungus.
