Learn All About Thyroid Medication for People With Low or HyperActive Thyroid

Thyroid Issues and Diagnosis

Your thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the back of your neck, just in front of your windpipe (trachea). It produces important hormones which regulate your body temperature, heart rate and other bodily functions. The main two most common thyroid issues are an underactive or an overactive thyroid.

Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

When a person’s thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones they have an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Common signs of underactive thyroid are tiredness, feeling depressed and gaining weight. Hormone tablets can be taken to replace the hormones which are not being made by the thyroid and this is the most common form of treatment. Sometimes the immune system attacks a person’s thyroid gland causing damage which causes or worsens this condition. Treatment for thyroid cancer can also cause an underactive thyroid.

Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

When a person’s thyroid gland produces too much of certain hormones it’s known as an overactive thyroid. It is also known as hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis. Anyone can have an overactive thyroid but the disease is more common in women aged between 20 and 40.

Thyroid Medication and Treatment Types

Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

There are lots of medicines known as thioamides which are usually prescribed to treat an overactive thyroid. They stop your thyroid from producing the excess hormones which cause the condition. Patients often have to take the medicine for 1 - 2 months before they notice any benefit. Beta-blockers are often also prescribed to give the patient some relief in the meantime.

Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

If you’re diagnosed with Hypothyroidism you will probably have to take thyroid medication for the rest of your life. Those with an underactive thyroid need to boost the volume of certain hormones in their system consistently to feel relief from their symptoms.
