What is Simbrinza Ophthalmic Suspension used for?

This eye solution is used to help lower pressure in the eyes caused by glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Its active ingredients are brinzolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, and brimonidine tartrate, an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist.

Note that this eye medication helps prevent the risk of nerve damage, loss of vision, or blindness.

How does Simbrinza Ophthalmic Suspension work?

An imbalance between the inflow and outflow of aqueous humor happens when there is a rise in intraocular pressure (IOP). The imbalance in aqueous humor leads to high pressure inside the eye that can press against the optic nerve. Too much pressure in the eye can damage your optic nerve, and as a result, glaucoma develops.

When this eye medication is administered correctly, the active ingredients work for hand and hand in reducing pressure in the eyes. One component inhibits the carbonic anhydrase enzyme, responsible for sodium and fluid transport in your eyes. The mechanism of action of this medication reduces the secretion of aqueous humor, decreasing IOP.

Another effect of this drug is stimulating alpha receptors in the ciliary body. These receptors are responsible for releasing aqueous humor into the eye. The stimulation results in the constriction of the blood vessels to reduce aqueous humor, thereby lowering IOP.

Simbrinza Ophthalmic Suspension Dosage

The dosage and frequency of this ophthalmic solution are different for every individual. It generally depends on the patient’s health status, the severity of their eye condition, age, and response to medication. This drug is available in optic suspension with a strength of 1/0.2%.

The recommended dose for treating increased eye pressure is one drop into the affected eye three times a day. Make sure not to exceed the daily dose of this eye medication to prevent experiencing unwanted side effects.

Directions on how to use Simbrinza Ophthalmic Suspension

Before using this eye medication, read all medication instructions and information provided in the patient leaflet. Use the drug precisely as instructed and consult your healthcare provider, especially if you are unsure how to administer this eye suspension.

Steps in using the eye suspension:

  1. Before using this eye solution, shake the eye drops bottle well. If you have contact lenses, remove them before using these eye drops.
  2. Tilt your head backward, then gently pull down the lower lid to form a small pocket.
  3. Squeeze one drop of Simbrinza into the pocket and close your eyes for about two minutes.
  4. Press the inner side of your eye to prevent the medication from draining away.
  5. Repeat these steps with the other eye.

Note that if you are using another ophthalmic solution, wait for at least five minutes before applying it. Make sure that the dropper tips and its other parts should not come in contact with your eyes to prevent contaminating the medication.
