Description

What is Flonase Nasal Spray Used For?

Flonase nasal spray uses the active ingredient fluticasone propionate in an aqueous nasal spray formulation, and it is mostly used to relieve seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) in adults.

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (SAR) – sometimes known as hay fever, SAR is an extremely common condition that happens to roughly 20% of all people at some point in their life. SAR happens due to allergic reactions to pollen, which is why it mostly affects people in the spring. This medication allows you to come prepared each year to conquer your seasonal allergies.

Perennial Allergic Rhinitis (PAR)

This medication can also be used to treat Perennial Allergic Rhinitis (PAR). PAR is a chronic condition that’s less common than SAR, wherein allergens are present throughout the year, and as such, symptoms might occur year-round. Allergens for this type of rhinitis can be animal dander, dust mites, or mold. This is used to reduce the symptoms felt year-round by those with PAR.

Can you use Flonase for Sinus Infection?

Nasal sprays are typically used for allergies; however, they can be useful when dealing with sinus infections, too. Corticosteroids such as Flonase have anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for infections of the sinuses. Sinus infections cause nasal congestion, swelling, and inflammation. Flonase Nasal Spray reduces swelling and inflammation to help clear blockages in the nasal passageways.

If you have a known hypersensitivity to fluticasone propionate or any non-active ingredient used to make this medication, then you should not use this medication under any circumstance.

You should not use Flonase while there is an infection of the respiratory tract present. Fungal or bacterial infections and tuberculosis of the upper respiratory tract can be prolonged or even worsened by corticosteroid nasal sprays. If you have a respiratory infection, or if you develop one while using Flonase, you should go to your doctor for medical advice about what to do.

This medication is intended only for adults, and is not to be used by pediatrics younger than 18 years old.

Other Warnings

You should never stop taking corticosteroid medications suddenly. If you wish to stop using Flonase Nasal Spray, talk to your doctor to develop a plan to ease you off the medication. Abruptly halting the use of a corticosteroid can lead to withdrawal symptoms, including weakness, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, and in some rare cases, death.

If you are pregnant or nursing, it may not be safe for you to use Flonase Nasal Spray. Talk to your doctor to weight the various risks and benefits.

Medications that are used to treat HIV and other steroidal medications can have a poor drug interaction with Flonase. Tell your doctor of any medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, and herbal medicines.

Some side effects of Flonase Nasal Spraycan be prompted when a pre-existing medical condition is present. Talk to your doctor if you have or have had liver disease, thyroid issues, nasal ulcers, recent nasal surgery, trauma around the nose, or blood clotting problems. This step will help mitigate and prevent the risk of side effects.

The effects of this medication can cause wounds to heal slower than normal. Do not use Flonase Nasal Spray if you have an injury in or near the nose. Do not spray this medication on the eyes or mouth.
