Lung Medication

Lung Medications for People with COPD

Lung disease includes disorders that affect the lungs, such as COPD, asthma, pneumonia, influenza, lung cancer, tuberculosis, and more. There are both short- and long-term lung medications that can be prescribed for relief of symptoms associated with COPD and asthma. At Maple Leaf Meds, we offer many of these medications at affordable prices.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

People with COPD suffer from the following symptoms:
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Tiredness
  • Mucus build-up
  • And more
The problem is there is no one medication that covers all the symptoms; therefore, those with COPD have to take different medications depending on their symptoms. Some medications can be taken as needed, where others should be taken regularly.

Types of Medications for COPD

Inhalers

Inhalers are the most common medication used by people with COPD, and they come in different types. We carry all types and many brands of inhalers.

Bronchodilators

Bronchodilators help people to breathe easier as they relax the muscles in the lungs to open the airways wider. Although they also come in pill and liquid form, inhalers work best. There are two groups of bronchodilators: anticholinergics and beta2-agonists. We have many bronchodilators available, such as Ventolin, its generic brand salbutamol, Combivent inhalers, its generic brands Ipratropium, and much more

Anticholinergics

Anticholinergics are short and long-acting inhaled medicines taken regularly to relieve breathlessness. These medicines prevent the muscles around the airways from tightening up. Short-acting anticholinergics work in around 15 minutes and last up to eight hours. The long-lasting forms start working in about 20 minutes and last up to 24 hours. We have medications available in both short and long-acting forms.

Beta2-agonists

Beta2-agonists help relieve breathlessness by relaxing the muscles around your airways. They are taken to provide quick relief or for prevention. These medications are inhaled and can be short or long-acting. Short-acting beta2-agonists can be used for quick-relief to open airways. Long-acting beta2-agonists are usually taken regularly to help prevent breathlessness.

Phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE-4) Inhibitors

PDE-4 are newer oral drugs used for treating COPD. Roflumilast is a PDE-4 drug that underwent several clinical trials that have shown improved lung function when used together with bronchodilator therapy. Some studies found that it also helps reduce flare-ups.

Combination Medicines and Steroids

Steroids reduce mucus and swelling in the airways to help you breathe easier. They are usually administered by inhalation but can also be taken in pill form. Doctors usually recommend patients use steroids along with anticholinergic or beta-agonist bronchodilators, as the combinations provide more benefits. We stock many brands of steroids and medications to take in combination with them.

Mucolytics

Mucolytic help to thin mucus in the lungs, making it easier to cough up. Some studies found they can also help reduce flare-ups, especially in more severe cases.
