Avelox Uses

Avelox, with the generic name moxifloxacin hydrochloride, is an antibacterial medication indicated to treat infections caused by designated susceptible bacteria among adults. It could be used for community-acquired pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, skin infections, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis. To lessen the development of drug-resistant bacterias, this drug is only used to treat and prevent infections that are proven to be caused by susceptible bacteria.

This quinolone antibiotic works by inhibiting topoisomerase II or DNA gyrase, and topoisomerase IV that is required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. It can treat bacterial infections by stopping the growth of bacteria. This is available in Avelox 400 mg tablet.

How to use Avelox

To initiate, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not take this fluoroquinolone if you have not thoroughly understood the drug information and instructions printed in the guide. If you need further medical advice or have questions about using this drug, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. You may take it with or without a meal or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole and drink plenty of water afterward unless contraindicated in your condition. It is not recommended to split, cut, crush, or chew Avelox.

Some medications or supplements may bind with this drug and decrease its effectiveness. Take Avelox antibiotics 4 hours before or 8 hours after taking sucralfate, quinapril, supplements with iron or zinc, and any products with magnesium, aluminum, or calcium.

Remember to take Avelox regularly and with a dosing schedule for best results. This drug is usually prescribed once daily, but the dosage and length of treatment will depend on your medical condition and/or response to treatment. Continue taking Avelox, and do not stop abruptly even if your symptoms have disappeared. Stopping Avelox early may cause the return of the infection.

Precautions when using Avelox

Before you start taking Avelox, make sure to fully disclose your medical history to your doctor. This includes any history of nerve problems, myasthenia gravis, joint or tendon problems, heart problems, liver disease, seizure disorder, blood vessel problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, mental disorders, and genetic conditions, namely Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Some medical conditions may affect how your body will respond to treatment. You also have to tell your doctor about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, for they may have drug interactions with moxifloxacin.

Continually watch out for an allergic reaction while on this treatment. Never take Avelox if you have a known allergy to moxifloxacin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any inactive ingredients Avelox may contain. Alert your local emergency line once you notice signs of hypersensitivity reaction like severe dizziness, itching, skin rashes, swelling of the face, and breathing trouble.

This antibiotic may cause QT prolongation. To avoid this, do not take water pills or diuretics and stay hydrated. You also have to monitor your potassium and magnesium levels as hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia could also trigger QT prolongation.

Although rare, this drug may also cause changes in blood sugar levels. If you are a diabetic, always monitor your blood sugar level for either hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Symptoms of hyperglycemia are increased thirst and urination, while symptoms of hypoglycemia are sweating, shaking, palpitations, and severe dizziness. Report to your physician immediately if any of these conditions occur.

Among the side effects of this drug are dizziness and lightheadedness. Use caution when doing activities that require alertness, such as driving and operating machinery. In addition, limit alcohol as it could also worsen the side effects.

Do not get vaccinated or immunized, especially with live bacterial vaccines. Avelox may interact and cause a significant decrease in the vaccine’s efficacy.

This antibiotic may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit sun exposure and avoid indoor tanning. If going outdoors, wear protective clothing and apply sunblock cream.

Always remember that potential benefits must outweigh potential risks. Pregnant moms and those who are breastfeeding must use this medication only if clearly needed.
