What is Ventolin?

Ventolin, with the generic name albuterol sulfate, is an oral inhalation indicated to prevent and treat bronchospasm among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma. It is also used for exercise-induced bronchospasm. Ventolin could control breathing symptoms like shortness of breath and wheezing.

This beta 2-adrenergic agonist works by increasing the cyclic AMP and activating protein kinase A. Then, it hampers myosin phosphorylation and decreases intracellular ionic calcium concentrations. As a result, Ventolin could relax the smooth muscles of the airways and inhibit the release of mast cell mediators in the airway.

This is available in Ventolin 100 mcg (90 mcg albuterol base) per actuation.

How to use Ventolin inhaler

To initiate, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not use this inhaler if you have not fully understood the drug information and instructions printed in the guide. In case you need further medical advice or have queries on how to use this inhaler, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Remember to use Ventolin as directed and with a dosing schedule. If you are prescribed other inhalers at the same time, there should be a one-minute interval for each. This is usually prescribed every four to six hours as needed. Do not alter your Ventolin dosage as it depends on your medical condition and response to treatment. Using Ventolin more often than prescribed could increase the risk of severe adverse reactions.

Step by step guide to using Ventolin:

  1. Check if the canister is firmly inserted in the actuator. The counter must show on the small window of the actuator,
  2. Shake the inhaler well. Then, remove the cover of the actuator and check the mouthpiece for any foreign objects.
  3. Hold the inhaler in a vertical position, with the mouthpiece down.
  4. Exhale through your mouth fully.
  5. Place the mouthpiece inside your mouth and seal your lips around it.
  6. Simultaneously push the canister fully as you inhale slowly and deeply through your mouth.
  7. After the medication has been dispensed, take your finger off the canister. Remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for not less than 10 seconds.
  8. Breathe out slowly. If you have prescribed 2 puffs, repeat steps 2-8.
  9. Put the cover back into the mouthpiece and ensure that it will snap firmly into place.

Precautions when using Ventolin

Before starting to use this medication, you must fully disclose your medical history to your physician, especially any history of heart problems, hypertension, or seizure. Some illnesses and disorders may have an impact on how your body responds to this medication. In addition, you must talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products you are taking due to possible drug interactions.

You must be watchful for an allergic reaction. Do not use this inhalation aerosol if you have a known allergy to albuterol, levalbuterol, metaproterenol, terbutaline, or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Immediately discontinue medication and call your emergency medical line once you notice signs of hypersensitivity, such as swelling of the face and neck, skin rashes, severe dizziness, hives, and trouble breathing.

Limit or, if possible, avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while using this inhaler. Alcohol could interact with albuterol and worsen side effects, like dizziness and headache. You must also practice extreme caution when operating machinery, driving, or doing activities that require alertness.

Pregnant and breastfeeding moms must use this oral inhalation only when clearly needed. Always remember that potential benefits must be greater than potential risks.
