What is Femring?

Femring, with the generic name estradiol acetate, is a vaginal ring indicated to manage moderate-severe vasomotor menopausal symptoms, like night sweats & hot flashes. It can also manage moderate-severe vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause.

This is available in Femring 0.05 mg per 24 hours and 0.1 mg per 24 hours vaginal ring.

How does Femring work?

This soft, flexible ring with a central core that contains estradiol acetate works by increasing the downstream effects of estrogen receptor binding, which reverses some of the symptoms of menopause. It modulates the pituitary secretion of hormones like gonadotropins, follicle-stimulating hormones, and luteinizing hormones through a negative feedback mechanism.

How to use Femring

To begin, read the medication information sheet included with this medicine. Do not use this prescription drug if you have not yet understood the drug information or instructions in the guide provided. If you need further medical advice or have queries on correctly using this vaginal ring, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Remember to use this prescription drug exactly as prescribed. Make a schedule to know when the vaginal ring should be replaced. Do not alter your Femring dosage as it is based on your overall health condition and response to treatment.

Step by step guide in inserting Femring:

  1. Wash & dry your hands before the ring insertion.
  2. Remove the vaginal ring from the packaging.
  3. Assume a position that you are most comfortable with.
  4. Using your thumb and index/pointer finger, press the sides of the vaginal ring together. Then, twist it into a figure-eight shape for easier insertion.
  5. Using your other hand, hold the folds of the skin around the vagina open.
  6. Put the tip of the ring into the opening of the vagina and use your pointer finger to push the folded ring gently into the vagina. Push it as high as you can.
  7. If you’re done, wash your hands once again.

To remove Femring:

  1. Wash & dry your hands before you remove the ring.
  2. In a comfortable position, put a finger into your vagina and hook it through the vaginal ring.
  3. Gently pull the ring downwards until it comes out.
  4. Using toilet paper, discard the ring correctly.
  5. Wash your hands again after removing the vaginal ring.

Precautions when using Femring

Before you start taking this drug, you should disclose your complete medical history to your physician, especially blood clotting disorders, bleeding of unknown cause, certain cancers, stroke, heart problems, liver disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, diabetes, hypothyroidism, lupus, obesity, hormone problems, mineral imbalance, asthma, seizure, gallbladder problems, porphyria, any mental or mood disorders. Some conditions may impact how your body will respond to the drug. You should also discuss all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products you are using due to possible drug interactions.

Be watchful for an allergic reaction while using this vaginal ring. Do not use this product if you have a known allergy to estradiol, silicone, or any inactive ingredients that each ring may contain. You must seek emergency medical attention once you notice signs of hypersensitivity, such as severe dizziness, swelling of the face and neck, hives, skin rashes, and difficulty breathing.

Avoid smoking or using tobacco while using estradiol. Tobacco has a component that could increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and high blood pressure, especially among women above the age of 35.

Tell your healthcare provider if you will be confined in a certain position for an extended period. This includes going through surgery or going on a long-haul flight. This is because limited movements could also increase the risk of developing blood clots.

This drug may cause dark and blotchy patches on the face and skin. Limit your sun exposure while using this vaginal ring and avoid indoor tanning. You should also apply sunblock cream and wear protective clothing when going out.
