What is Cymbalta?

Cymbalta, with the generic name duloxetine HCl, is an oral medication used for major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic musculoskeletal pain. It also decreases nervousness and improves appetite, mood, sleep, and energy level.

This selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) has antidepressant, anxiolytic, and central pain inhibitory properties that may be due to the potentiation of noradrenergic and serotonergic activities in the central nervous system. This is available in Cymbalta 60 mg, 30 mg, and 20 mg capsule forms.

How to use Cymbalta

To begin, read and understand the medication information leaflet that comes with this drug. Never take this oral medication if you have not fully understood all the information in the guide. If you need further medical advice or have queries regarding this treatment, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this capsule orally. You can be taken with or without food. However, if you have nausea, it might help to take it with food. Do not split, cut, or chew the capsules to avoid releasing the active ingredients at once. Swallow the medication whole and drink a glass of water.

Remember to rake this medication regularly and with a dosing schedule for best results. This oral capsule is usually taken once or twice a day – depending on the recommendation of your physician. Your Cymbalta dosage will depend on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Never alter your dosing or frequency. Moreover, do not stop taking this drug even if you feel better to avoid worsening conditions.

This is not a complete or full list of Cymbalta side effects.

Precautions

Before using this antidepressant, disclose your complete medical history to your physician, especially suicide attempts, psychiatric disorders, bleeding problems, high blood pressure, stomach problems, liver disease, kidney disease, glaucoma, and seizures. Some medical conditions may significantly affect how you will respond to treatment. In addition, tell your doctor about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, or herbal products you are taking as they might interact with duloxetine.

Always watch out for an allergic reaction when taking this drug. Do not take this oral drug if you have a known allergy to duloxetine or other inactive ingredients that each capsule contains. Discontinue medication and seek emergency help when you develop signs of hypersensitivity response, such as skin rashes, swelling of the face, severe dizziness, hives, and difficulty breathing.

Regularly check your blood sugar and blood pressure because they may be affected by this medication. If you develop hypertension or increase in blood sugar level, consult your doctor immediately. It may be necessary to adjust your other medications.

Avoid alcoholic beverages and practice caution when doing activities that require alertness or clear vision, like using machinery or driving. This is because drowsiness, dizziness, and vision changes are among the side effects of this drug.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid this SNRI. It is known to cause bleeding. It also passes into the breastmilk and could cause harm to a breastfed baby.
