What is Cosopt?

Cosopt (generic name: dorzolamide hydrochloride & timolol maleate) is an ophthalmic solution indicated to manage the reduction of elevated pressure in the eye or IOP (intraocular pressure) among patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. By lowering the pressure inside the eye, blindness could be prevented.

This eye solution is a combination of carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent. This medication reduces aqueous humor secretion to decrease intraocular pressure. Cosopt also inhibits carbonic anhydrase in the ciliary processes of the eye by slowing the formation of bicarbonate ions, succeeding in a reduction in sodium and fluid transport.

This is available in Cosopt 20 mg/mL dorzolamide + 5 mg/mL timolol solution.

How to use Cosopt

Begin by reading the medication information leaflet that comes with this product. Avoid using this prescription medication if you have not fully understood the drug information and instructions printed in the guide. If you need further medical advice or have queries on Cosopt use, you may have to ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Remember to use this drug regularly and exactly as directed. Keeping a dosing schedule will help you avoid forgetting your dose. If you are prescribed other eye drugs, there must be at least five minutes intervals between each medication. Note that eye drops should be applied prior to eye ointments to allow proper absorption. Moreover, do not alter your dosage or stop using this eye solution abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Step by step guide in using Cosopt:

  1. Wash your hands each time you apply an eye medication.
  2. Tear off the safety seal and turn the cap counterclockwise to unscrew it.
  3. Tilt your head slightly backward. Then, pull the lower eyelid of the affected eye gently and look up.
  4. Turn the bottle upside down with the tip of the dropper right above your eye. Avoid touching your eye.
  5. Press the bottle lightly to release one drop.
  6. Look down and slowly close your eye. Press the inner corners of your eye to prevent the solution from draining.
  7. Close the bottle once you are done.
