What is Breo Ellipta?

Breo Ellipta, with the generic name fluticasone furoate and vilanterol), is an oral inhalation used as maintenance treatment for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with bronchitis and emphysema. It can also prevent and decrease symptoms such as wheezing and trouble breathing.

This inhalation powder is a combination of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists (LABA). This medication works by decreasing inflammation, relaxing the bronchial smooth muscle, and inhibiting the release of mediators of immediate hypersensitivity from cells. It is available in Breo Ellipta 200 25 and Breo Ellipta 100/25.

How to use Breo Ellipta

To start, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this inhalation. Never use Breo Ellipta if you have not fully understood the drug information in the guide. If some of the instructions are unclear or you have further questions, ask your physician or pharmacist.

Use Breo Ellipta regularly to achieve full benefits. Administer it exactly as prescribed. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing a dose. Do not alter your Breo Ellipta dosage or use it more frequently than prescribed to prevent worsening conditions.

If you are prescribed other inhalations, there should be at least a one-minute interval to allow drug absorption. Use Breo Ellipta last. In case this medication stops working effectively, or your condition worsens, use your prescribed quick-relief inhaler instead.

Step by step guide on using Breo Ellipta

  1. Open the cover by sliding it down until you see the mouthpiece. You will hear a click. Then, check the counter if it counts down by 1 number. This means that your inhaler is ready to use. Do not shake the inhaler.
  2. Hold the inhaler away and exhale fully and deeply.
  3. Put your mouth around the mouthpiece and seal your lips firmly around it. Breathe in slowly, deeply, and fully through your mouth. Your fingers should not block the air vent.
  4. After inhalation, remove the mouthpiece and hold your breath for not less than 4 seconds or as long as comfortable for you.
  5. Breathe out slowly. It is normal for you to taste or feel the inhalation powder in your mouth.
  6. Clean the mouthpiece using a dry tissue and slide the cover-up to close.
  7. Rinse your mouth with clean water and then, spit it out.
