Azopt Eye Drops Uses

Azopt eye drops are used to treat elevated intraocular pressure created by either ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.

Intraocular pressure refers to the pressure of the fluids inside the eye. A watery, gel-like substance called the aqueous humor fills the eye between the cornea and iris and behind the ocular lens. The aqueous humor is responsible for protecting the eye against pollutants and transporting nutrients to parts of the eye that are not connected to blood vessels.

Fluidity of the aqueous humor is integral to good eye health. When the pressure in the aqueous humor becomes too high, it cannot flow as freely as it did before, restricting its functions. Increased eye pressure can lead to optic nerve damage and vision impairment.

Open-Angle Glaucoma:

This condition occurs when there is a blockage near the cornea that prevent the aqueous humor from draining properly, which leads to a build-up of pressure in the eye.

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma, and it’s characterized by:

  • Reddening of the sclera (the white membrane that covers the eye)
  • Reduction in vision, especially in the peripheries
  • Swelling which results in corneal protrusion
  • Decreased dilation functions
  • Nausea

Ocular Hypertension:

Ocular hypertension is the clinical term to refer to high intraocular pressure. Ocular hypertension occurs when there is a lack of proper drainage of the aqueous humor. You can develop ocular hypertension without having glaucoma, but high eye pressure can often lead to glaucoma. There are a number of causes for this condition, such as disease, injury, medications, and genetics.

Azopt Eye Drops Mechanism of Action

Azopt Eye Drops is an aqueous suspension eye drop that contains 1% Brinzolamide as the active ingredient. Brinzolamide is a sulfonamide that is administered topically and absorbed into the eye where its medicinal effects take place. Azopt eye drops is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, meaning it works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA), which is responsible for the secretion of aqueous humor. When CA is inhibited in the eye, the ciliary body cannot produce aqueous humor anymore, thus resulting in a decrease of intraocular pressure.

How to Use

Warning: Preservatives in Azopt eye drops medication can cause damage to your contact lenses. Always remember to take your contacts out before using the eye dropper and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.

Wash your hands thoroughly to avoid contaminating your eyes. Shake the solution well before using. To apply, tilt your head back so your eyes are pointing upwards. Gently pinch your lower eyelid and pull it down, then slowly squeeze the dropper directly above your eye, making sure the drop will land in your eye. If the drop successfully landed on your eye, close your eyelid for a minute or two.

Try to refrain from touching your eye with the dropper. This can contaminate the dropper which can lead to an eye infection.

If you use any other eye drop medications, you should give yourself at least 10 minutes between uses.

Azopt Eye Drops Dosage

The dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s), administered three times a day. If your doctor has given you a different dosage, you should follow their instructions, and never exceed their dose or take less than what they recommend.

Storage

Keep these eye drops at room temperature and away from moisture exposure.
