What is Avodart/Dutasteride used for?

The prostate gland may continue to grow in many man, even when they are in their 50s. This continued growth of the prostate is the disease referred to as Enlarging Prostate or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Studies show that 50% of men over the age of 50 have an enlarged prostate. As the prostate grows, it places pressure on the urethra—the tube that carries urine and semen out of the penis. This increase in pressure on the urethra may lead to some bothersome urinary symptoms and in some rare cases may even lead to prostate surgery. AVODART is a medication that treats Enlarging Prostate. The medication works by shrinking the size of the prostate to reduce the risk of needing surgery for an enlarged prostate and the risk of developing acute urinary retention (AUR), the sudden inability to urinate. Avodart also improves bothersome urinary symptoms in the long term.
